Is it the way the pages fold, the expressive pictures they show, the knowledge they hold, or the many wonderful stories they tell?

LibraryIndividuals and professional craftsmen from around the world have created special rooms to store book collections, and not just in the public libraries. There are many private homes that have a special area dedicated just to books, be it an entire room filled with wall-to-wall shelving, or a small nook with a bookcase and reading chair placed next to a fireplace.

The types of books found in a home library will depend on what the homeowners like to read, what hobbies they have, or what they do professionally. Magnifying glasses can also assist with your reading, while bookmarks will help you find your way back to your story after a break. Of course, there are many more items that can make a home library special. What they are will depend on your personal needs and taste. Happy reading!

Collecting home literature

ArtThere are not many people in the civilized world who do not know what a ‘book’ is. Nothing Beats a Home Library

Book lovers everywhere are faced with the same dilemma. Even if they vow that they aren't going to buy any more books and that they'll get them from the public library instead, their private book collections seem to grow anyway. They pick up bargain books, or a new bestseller, and friends give them books as gifts. As the books start to pile up, you'd think they could resell the ones they've already read. However, a true book-o-phile would rather time, though, it becomes a problem to know what to do with all those books. That's when building a home library makes a lot of sense.
A home library doesn't have to be a fancy, paneled room like you see in movies. All it really needs is a lot of shelves. If you don't have a whole room to devote to your books, you can use the upper wall space you aren't using in one of your rooms, or you can even create a library space in a closet. With 8' ceilings, even a closet can provide a lot of room for shelving and books. If you use a closet, you can either leave the doors on in order to hide your library collection, or you can remove them to create a book nook.
Next you need to decide if you're going to build the shelves yourself or hire someone to do it for you. Bookshelves need to be very sturdy, because books are heavy. If you build your shelves with lumber that is too light and thin, it will eventually bow under the weight of the books. Therefore, choose to construct your shelves with at least 3/4" boards, and you should be okay. Depending on the size of the space you are using, there are prefinished shelf boards available at most lumber yards. You can use metal hardware to hang the shelves or build supports out of wood, however you choose to do it.
When you finally arrange your books on the shelves and are able to view your entire collection, you'll be delighted at the outcome of your project.
